7 of the 10 GOP lawmakers who voted to impeach President Trump are already facing backlash and primary challengers, according to a new report from Newsweek.
One of them is Congressman David Valadao, who won a nail biter race in a California swing district against Democrat TJ Coxx.
Chris Mathys, a former Fresno, California, city council member, told Newsweek “after my last election, I had decided not to run again. But the vote by Congressman Valadao to impeach President Trump with no witnesses, evidence, or without allowing any defense was too much for me to stay on the sidelines.”
Valadao was an outspoken critic of Trump after the U.S. Capitoi riot, calling Trump’s rhetoric prior to the debacle “un-American, abhorrent and absolutely an impeachable offense.”
The most high profile House Republican who voted to impeach Trump was by no doubt Liz Cheney.
She will now be facing a primary challenge from State Senator Richard Bouchard, who called her vote proof of how “out-of-touch” she is with Wyoming.
According to Newsweek “challengers have also come out against Representatives Adam Kinzinger, Dan Newhouse and Anthony Gonzalez. Another Republican has created an exploratory committee in a potential bid for Representative Tom Rice’s seat and local GOP organizations have vowed to recruit someone to go after Representative Jamie Herrera Buetler’s spot in Congress.”
