So much for “defunding the police.”
The mantra that progressives echoed in the weeks following George Floyd’s death is apparently taking a back seat to the need to fight a surge in crime in Los Angeles County.
Los Angeles County Metro has voted to increase police funding by $36 million dollars as crime has surged.
Per the Blaze “In the first two months of 2021, Los Angeles Police Department officers have fielded 88% more reports of shots fired than the same time period in 2020. Gunshot victims in L.A. are up 141% versus last year, and homicides are up 39%, according to Crosstown, a nonprofit news organization based out of the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.”
The funding passed unanimously in a 12-0 vote.
In June of last year, Mayor Garvetti claimed “we will not be increasing our police budget,” saying he would be “reinvesting in black communities and communities of color” instead.
