While other news in the headlines has buried this story, it’s one of importance given how bizarre the situation is becoming.
I’m referencing the fact that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has still not filled out the remaining seats on the House Intelligence Committee and Rep. Devin Nunes is demanding answers as to why she hasn’t done that yet.
According to the Washington Examiner, Nunes recently brought attention to the matter, explaining that only he and Rep. Adam Schiff, the Intel Committee Chairman, have been selected to sit on one of the most coveted and influential committees in Congress.
“It’s rather strange, so we don’t know. She has not agreed on ratios, we should get another member, so we don’t know yet who she is going to appoint. It’s a big mystery around here. Everybody’s waiting to see,” Nunes recently said during a podcast interview.
The situation is even more strange given that a former member of the committee, Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, made headlines late last year over his potentially compromising situation involving a woman, Christine Fang, who is suspected of being a Chinese spy. Obviously, selecting him for the committee in the new session of Congress would be controversial, to say the least, given that nobody is certain on just how compromised he might be.
Swalwell’s controversy is so intense that several high-ranking GOP lawmakers have vowed to investigate the California Democrat if he’s once again picked to sit on the Intel Committee.
Adding more layers to a complex situation, Schiff has reportedly lobbed California Gov. Gavin Newsom to be selected for the role of California Attorney General. Given that Schiff is the chairman of the Intel Committee, it could further complicate Pelosi’s strategy on how to fill the empty chairs.
The only reason Schiff is aiming for the position at this time is that the current California AG, Xavier Becerra, was selected by President Joe Biden as his nominee to head up the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Depending on whether or not he’s confirmed will then determine whether or not Schiff gets a shot at filling his role.
Nunes slammed Pelosi, saying that she “continues to play games, and so the committee hasn’t even been organized.”
However, Nunes wasn’t exactly thrilled at the reputation that the House Intel Committee has built over the past several years, especially under former President Donald Trump, as the committee was responsible for its role in the Russian collusion hoax, the first impeachment and other clown shows that put the committee in a negative public light for many.
“I think their new issue is going to be domestic violence and domestic extremism, for Republicans and conservatives only, of course, so they want to investigate every conservative in America,” Nunes added.
Still, it’s time for Pelosi to put down her fancy ice cream and do her job. Reports say that the committee could be filled out as early as this week, but only time will tell.
