Less than 24 hours after former President Barack Obama claimed gun violence is a “epidemic” a report was published claiming that Biden is considering declaring a new public health emergency to deal with gun violence.
According to a report from the New York Times officials inside the administration are planning sweeping executive actions and other methods to impose gun control nationwide under the guise of an emergency to do it.
Should Biden declare a public health emergency he could enforce similar restrictions the country faced during the pandemic and could empower other states to declare their own “emergency.”
White House press secretary Jen Psaki admitted the administration is looking at various ways to enforce gun control.
“He certainly believes that, but there are also executive actions under consideration that we will continue working through internally,” she said about Biden. “And there’s lots of levers you can take.”
According to the Times Biden is considering executive orders because he doesn’t seem to believe a bill would get through Congress.
From the Times:
But Mr. Biden has acknowledged that he does not know what legislation might be possible, even after the recent shootings in Atlanta and Boulder. “I haven’t done any counting yet,” he said on Tuesday, when asked if he had the political capital to move forward with any gun safety measures.
Declaring gun violence a public health crisis would not only allow Biden to use emergency funds to beef up the ATF but he could also use it to impose tougher restrictions or bans because, “it’s an emergency.”
This week, there was also another blow to the 2nd Amendment, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Americans do not have a right to open carry a firearm.
The appeals court cited that the government could prohibit “certain weapons from entering… public spaces as means of providing ‘domestic Tranquility’ and forestalling ‘domestic Violence.”
