In a recent statement Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell said he may oppose Trump-backed Senate candidates if he deems them not electable.
“My goal is, in every way possible, to have nominees representing the Republican Party who can win in November. I’m not predicting the president would support people who couldn’t win. But I do think electability — not who supports who — is the critical point, McConnell told Politico.
“Some of them may be people the former president likes. Some of them may not be. The only thing I care about is electability,” he added.
Despite voting to acquit former President Trump, McConnell suggested Trump is “practically and morally responsible” for the U.S. Capitol riot that took place January 6th.
McConnell said while speaking on the Senate floor “there is no question that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day.”
“The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president,” he added
“President Trump is still liable for everything he did while he was in office as an ordinary citizen,” McConnell also warned. “He didn’t get away with anything. Yet.”
